Deli Delicious

Update 10/4/11: Deli Delicious has closed.

In a word: Buried treasure on the north side of Mendota.

The specs: #0126
Address, hours & details via Isthmus; reviews at Wisconsin Fish Fry Reviews, Madison Fish Fry, collected at del.icio.us; official web site; Deli Delicious LLC on Urbanspoon

JM ate the BBQ chicken and a lemonade.
Nichole ate the tomato grilled cheese and a Dr Pepper.
The bill was $13, or $6.50/person, plus tip.
Nichole gave Deli Delicious an A; JM gave Deli Delicious an A- (see our grading rubric).

In a nondescript strip mall on the north side of Madison, Deli Delicious turns out some of the best sandwiches we've had yet. Served up with amazingly good homemade chips by the friendly and welcoming owner, both our dinners were done well.

The menu is short, but that's rarely a bad thing. In this case it meant focus on nice touches, like the fresh basil leaves on the grilled cheese. The dinner menu's comfort food offerings were tempting, and we saw several customers stop in for takeaway to what we can only assume were grateful families in the neighborhood.

Add to that Ancora coffee, Chocolate Shoppe ice cream, and a choice of Pepsi or Coke (hallelujah!)  in bottles, and you have a local fave that everyone can agree on.  The owner also informed us that they do a Friday takeout Fish Fry that feeds some 3-digit number of people.  Not bad for the kind of restaurant Burger King and McDonalds tried to render obsolete.  Score another point for eating local.
