Christy's Landing

In a word: Run-of-the-mill bar food in the middle of nowhere.

The specs: #0084
Address, hours & details via Isthmus; reviews at  Ultimate Madison Bar Tour, Madison Fish Fry, collected at del.icio.us; Christy's Landing on Urbanspoon

JM ate the Cajun chicken sandwich with curly fries and a lemonade.
Nichole ate the cheeseburger with swiss cheese and regular fries.
The bill was $9, or $4.50/person, (with coupon) plus tip.
JM and Nichole both gave Christy's Landing a B (see our grading rubric).

Latest Christy's Landing news and reviews

The ideal Christy's Landing experience would probably be on a bright summer day. A bike ride down to the shores of Lake Waubesa for a burger and a few beers, then back to the city for a nap; perfect.

Unfortunately, the weather on our visit was cold and dreary. Though it probably sabotaged the beach appeal of Christy's Landing, it made for a scenic drive around Lake Waubesa and past the home of Sculptural Steel's Ferrosaurus Rex.

Not a very flattering picture, we know.

When we walked through the door, it took us a moment to get our bearings, and the regulars swiveled on their stools to check out the newbies. After wandering around the bar area, up to the banquet room, and then back to the lower level, we finally picked a tall table by the window and Nichole went to the bar to order.

The menu was focused (i.e., small, not necessarily a bad thing). We didn't wait long for the sandwiches, which was good as it was getting smoky and our pinko lungs, unused to second-hand smoke in Madison restaurants, were getting irritated.

As for the sandwiches, Kate's burger rating guide was helpful.

  • Bun: toasted wheat.
  • Meat: just decent, not hidden under condiments. Fried?
  • Bun/meat ratio: perfect.
  • Cheese: Swiss; not particularly memorable.
  • Misc.: served with appealing leaf lettuce, a slice of tomato, and a crunchy pickle spear. About a 7 of 10 overall.

JM had a rather uncompelling chicken sandwich with average fries.  A lot of the Christy's landing experience was sort of average which is a shame because it could be a real destination.  But a lot is said by the golf ball-sized hole in the restroom door and the urinal advertising space with no ads.

Again, we're sure they do some lovely things in the summer, as this (defunct?) local band's testimony and the ads for beach volleyball attest.

Hey, you used my Burger rating standard (BRS)! How cool is that!

Have I told you how much I enjoy your quest? Well, I do!

Thanks! The BRS is invaluable. I've used it on every burger since. Having such a rubric is useful - fun even!

(Much enjoying the wine posts, btw.)

I was deeply offended by your review of Christy's Landing - home to the funnest volleyball team ever, the Save the Ligers Society. ...Just kidding, I love your website. I'd recommend hitting Christy's on a nice summer day though. It really is a great spot on the lake.
